Okay...dear god I never post anything on here. I think I am going to change that. Maybe, I will make a new year resolution.
WARNING: SPOILERS ON JENNIFER MORRISON'S MOVIES. DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE SPOILERS FOR HOUSE AND HER OTHER MOVIES.
Anyway, on the main issue I wanted to discuss here:
JENNIFER MORRISON URBAN LEGENDS 2 INTERVIEW
Here is the main article:
http://s663.photobucket.com/albums/uu360/Aleki_77/?action=view¤t=femme1.jpgPlease read the entire thing of the black and white pages. Okay, I loved the main issue Jen addressed in this . She openly points out how she gets crappy scripts that showcase women as "breaking down" and being "weak" every 2 seconds. She also addressed how she wanted to tweak how much her char. broke down. I absolutely love this. I think it is very true in society. It (the sexism in the entertainment industry) is something many female actors have complained about or acknowledged. Especially the brilliant ellen page whom we all know from "Juno". Now we should consider some of the roles jen has gotten over the years:
Urban Legends 2: she played a strong woman who is an individualist and controls a lot of situations (as pointed out in this article).
Grind: she played a leading skateboarder chick (in a sport that women were considered inferior). She shows up the boys in skating skills and helps them out to get into a competition at the end. She is rather on the "ins" of the sport world and says screw you to a skater guy who talks trash about her behind her back. She also directly states " I think I can take care of myself" to Eric Rivers when he tries to defend her. A definate departure from the lame "damsel in distress" .
Big Stan: she played a ditzy girl who shows toward the end that she has more spit fire, indepedence, and intellect than her own husband gives her credit for. She shows up her husband when she learns martial arts at the end and saves his ass from a corrupt head jail gaurd. Even though she has chest implants, she still stands up for herself when her husband pretends she is going to get "raped" (That scene is the best b/c u really see her char. get really damn angry at her husband's antics).
Stir of Echoes: she played the ghost who was terrifying Bacon's lead char. Her char. gets raped but she gets her avengence in her own right by alerting Bacon's char. to her death/cause of death/rape. So in a way, she brings her rapists to justice. I think one kills himself (he didn't actually rape her but he let it happen) and the other (who actually raped her char.) is shot.
Comand & Conquer 3: she played a lead woman commander in rank who was "aiding"/giving directions to the player. Bonus: she wasn't a prostitute or some demon char. with no clothes on (have you
seen some of those other fictitiuos chars? GAG. ).
The Murder of Princess Diana: she was great. She was the lead news journalist/reporter and was very detective-ish trying to uncover the supposed death of princess Di, Independent, and strong. Not emotionally weak what so ever and trys to bring the "corrupt" people to justice. Granted it's lifetime so of course it is going to be very feminist (don't get me wrong I like lifetime movies and shows but come on, sometimes they make it worse by almost always having women getting abuse/raped/cheated on/screwed over/violated/hurt/emotionally devastated or whatever in SOME fashion) .
Surviving Christmas: Okay, so she is an utter ditz in this but she is very independent, snotty, and rich. Besides, she kinda makes a stand for herself by saying "f-you" (not literally) to Ben's lead guy char. and his insanity with his pretend family. She stands in her own right and fights for what she wants in the relationship.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith: she didn't really have a real role in this but she played an assasin assistant and wasn't in a dominatrix or little schoolgirl skimpy outfit. She wore a fairly conseravtive skirt and black knee highs and a vest long sleeved shirt. She got to kick some ass and showcased intellect in that....um....industry. She had a dignified look and manner to her.
Flourish: she was great in this as a crazy person. She walked that fine line very well. She was mentally crazy but she was the lead and had a sense of drive. She's not slutty or just wondering around acting stereotypically crazy. Although her char. is lost, the movie shows depth to the char. and shows the char. trying to gain control over an insane situation. You also get her sense of hopelessness at not being in control or not having mental stability. (Bonus: Leighton Meester who now plays the lovely and bitchy Blair played the bratty 16-year old who goes missing)
House: So there was a time when I could once call her char., "Cam", strong and indepedent. Cam is a doctor for god's sake in a mainstream television show that has attained great recognition. That is a bit of a big deal considering women are often looked down as just merely "nurses" (who deserve way more respect and recognition than they get now. Hopefuly "Mercy" can change that). But in general, in today's society it is great that more women are doctors and stand on their own-AND get recognition in that aspect via media. I mean, cam is an equal in many ways. She was an equal with chase and 4man. She also is more of an equal to house now in s.4/s.5./s.6. She snarks back and fights more. Besides, cam didn't last as the "weak" one. She had growth/progression and was WAY more mature in the later seasons. She stands on her own a LOT more and doesn't get emotionally weak toward harsh situations. When she is emotional, it is done in more realistic ways. Cam also showcases the value that emotion has in medicine. How connecting emotionally with ur patient and not treating them completely like cattle matters. I loved that about cam even if she got a tad preachy at times. There was sincerety and depth to her char. and who she was as a person. However, i did find it a bit annoying when she was shown as the loser in recent eps. She is the only one who DOESN"T get what is going on with dibala? Really? Come on.
The point I am trying to get at is that it is interesting how lucky jen has been with roles. Granted, she's had to handle a few sexist roles where it is obvious she was just eye candy and not really given depth. Yet, for the most part, she has been lucky. I find her roles similar to ellen page's roles. Granted, both are different in personal tastes and acting styles. Yet, they both have attained strong acting roles where the women were written to be strong, influential, individualistic, indepedent, intelligent, and cool. I really hope that the stereotypical written women on screen of being generally stupid, whiny, ditzy, slutty, taking garments off, breaking down every 2 seconds, and being weak ends. I think it is slowly getting better. Your thoughts?
